Class Breakdown – Battleblog #2
In the second edition of EA’s Battleblog, we review the four Battlefield 3 classes and new in-game features. The four classes that will be available are Assault, Engineer, Recon and Support. Every class plays a crucial role in the fight which makes for a balanced roster. Two new in game features covered in this week’s Battleblog are bipods and suppression fire.

ASSAULT
The assault class is built to be right in the middle of the battlefield, providing frontline fire while having the ability to have medic abilities! With Battlefield 3′s “play it your way” mentality, you will be able to fully customize your class to be firepower oriented or more medic based (having access to med-kits & defibrillators).
Recap:
- Frontline Fire
- Medic Ability (Medkits + Defibrillators)
ENGINEER
The Engineer class is both versatile and incredibly effective on the battlefield. As an Engineer you will have the ability to repair vehicles on the fly, take out enemy armor, and even build facades that enemy players may be hiding in. To top it all off, Engineers are equipped with carbine weapons to quickly pick off enemy targets in a blink of an eye.
Recap:
- Repair Vehicles
- Anti-Armor
- Destroy Buildings
- Carbine Weapons
SUPPORT
As a Support class, you will be in charge of providing heavy cover fire for your team mates. Using a LMG, you can quickly move accross the battlefield, setup your bipod and get right in the action!
Recap:
- Light Machine Guns (LMG)
- Provide Heavy Firepower
RECON
Playing as the Recon class in battlefield 3 is no one man army. Using the long range scope, you can spot enemy targets and give off their location to your team. New teamplay oriented gadgets will be implemented to keep a Recon player in the fight no matter how far away! Keep a look out for more information about these gadgets in future Battleblogs.
Recap:
- Long Range Sniper
- Sniper Scope
- Spot Enemies and Give Location to team (BFBC2)
- Recon Oriented Gadgets
Senior Multiplayer Designer Alan Kertz at DICE said:
“Recon traditionally has been seen as just a sniper. We wanted to change that perception, so we’ve built several completely new teamplay oriented gadgets specifically for the Recon class so he can be a team player, even if he’s sitting on the top of Wookie Mountain.”
BIPODS
Bipods allow you to dramatically increase the stability of your weapon while backing up your team mates with cover fire. Players can deploy a bipod while standing/kneeling in front of a accessible object, such as a window sill or when zooming in with a LMG when proned. More about Bipods can be read here.
Cliffs:
- Increase Weapon Stability
- Allow Heavy Cover Fire
SUPPRESSION FIRE
This is a new in-game mechanic that will allow you to lay down fire at an opponent, but have it show up as a graphical blur on their screen. Suppression fire will be crucial for those lone-wolf players stuck in a 1v5 situation, scaring off the incoming enemy squad. The best part of all? You will also be rewarded with experience points!
Cliffs:
- Flying Bullets appear blurry towards enemies, scaring them.
- Earn Experience Points
